Almost everyone who plans a long trip from Coimbatore to Chennai asks the same thing: should I book a drop taxi, or a round trip with the same car waiting for me? Both are fine. Neither is always cheaper. The answer depends on how many days you will stay, whether you need a car in the other city, and how the fare is built. This guide walks through the thinking, so you can compare two quotes yourself instead of guessing.
What the two bookings actually mean
A drop taxi is a single journey. The car takes you from A to B and the trip ends there. You pay for the distance from A to B, and the driver handles his own way back. In Tamil Nadu people also say one way cab or drop only, and they all mean the same thing.
A round trip is a booking for both ways. The car takes you to B, stays with you or waits near you, and brings you back to A. The fare is worked out on the total distance of the whole trip, usually with a minimum number of kilometres for every day the car is with you, plus a driver allowance for each day.
How the fare is built in each case
For a drop taxi the main part of the fare is the one way distance multiplied by the rate for the car you picked. Toll, state entry charges and parking are shown separately or included, depending on the quote. Night driving may add a small charge if you travel late.
For a round trip the main part is the total kilometres, but there is a catch. Most round trips apply a daily minimum. If you take a car for three days, you are usually charged for at least that many kilometres per day, even if you only drive a short distance on the second day. The driver allowance and the night halt, if the driver has to stay overnight, are added for each day.
A worked example without any rupee figures
Take Coimbatore to Chennai. It is a long road journey, about five hundred kilometres each way, and most people leave in the evening and reach in the early morning. Now look at two plans.
Plan one: you go to Chennai for a three day family function and return on the fourth day. A round trip means the car and driver are booked for the full period. You pay the daily minimum and the driver allowance for each day, whether or not you use the car in Chennai. If you will move around Chennai a lot, that is useful, because the same driver is there. If you will mostly stay at the venue, you are paying for a car that sits parked.
Plan two: you book a drop taxi from Coimbatore to Chennai, use autos, app cabs or a local hourly rental in Chennai, and book another drop taxi from Chennai back to Coimbatore when you are ready. You pay for the distance twice, but you do not pay for waiting days. For a stay of three or more days with little driving, this often works out cheaper. For a stay of one day with several stops, the round trip usually wins.
When a drop taxi is usually the better choice
Choose a drop taxi when you travel only one way, when you are moving house or leaving a city for good, when you will stay many days and will not need a car in the other city, or when your return date is not fixed. It is also the sensible choice for airport and railway station transfers, where you only need to be picked up and dropped once.
- One way only, with no plan to come back by the same car
- A long stay where the car would sit idle
- Return date or time not yet decided
- Airport, railway station or bus stand transfers
When a round trip is usually the better choice
A round trip suits a same day or next day return, trips with several stops, family travel with elders who want the same driver all the way, and places where finding a return car is difficult, such as a small town or a hill road late at night. You also avoid the risk of arranging a second booking at the last minute, when cars may be harder to get during festival weeks.
Things that quietly change the total
Whichever you choose, read what the quote includes. Toll plazas on the Salem and Krishnagiri side add up on a long highway trip, and the Chennai return will have its own tolls. Ask whether parking at your venue is included, whether the fare covers a halt if you travel overnight, and what the charge is for each extra hour of waiting or each extra kilometre beyond the plan. Entering another state can bring an entry charge; the quote should say so before you pay.
A simple way to compare two quotes
Write both plans down for your exact dates. For each, list the kilometres you will pay for, the number of days you will pay a daily minimum and allowance, and every extra charge that is not included. Then add up the plan, not just the headline rate. If the numbers are close, pick the one that is easier on you: a round trip when you want one driver and no planning, a drop taxi when you want freedom and a short commitment. On Oray you can see the full fare for both options before you confirm, with charges shown up front.
Questions
Do I pay for the driver's return when I book a drop taxi?
No. A drop taxi is priced for the single journey you take. The driver's way back is not added as a separate charge to you.
Is a round trip always more expensive than a drop taxi?
Not always. If you return the same or next day and make several stops, one round trip booking is often cheaper than two separate drop taxis. For a long stay with little driving, drop taxis usually cost less.
Can I change from a drop taxi to a round trip after booking?
Changes depend on the booking and the cancellation terms shown at the time you book. It is safer to decide before you confirm, and to check the cancellation policy on the fare screen.
What is a daily minimum kilometre?
It is the least number of kilometres the fare is calculated on for each day the car is with you. If you drive less than that, you still pay for the minimum.
